Chapter 5

Samuel was sick of sleeping in the car with his sister, especially since she took all of the back seat, and he had to work out how to sleep under the steering wheel and hump in the middle. Sitting up, leaning his chair back as far as he could without pissing Janice off again, he decided he was awake now and wouldn’t be getting any more sleep tonight. Glancing at the clock on the dashboard, he realized that even if he wanted to sleep more, it was nearly five-thirty now, and the town would be moving around, so he’d not get any sleep then either.

The hotel parking lot where they’d been staying was off limits to them now, so they’d been parking in lots behind shops, on side streets, and in the store lots. It was a lot of moving around, but so far, the last five nights it had worked for them. But he was sick of it.

Yesterday he’d forgotten where they’d parked. It had taken him the better part of three hours to find the car. It hadn’t been in any of the places he remembered they were parking, and he was about as pissed off as he could have been when Janice told him she had things to do. He had to walk to every place he needed to be at while she took the fucking car.

“It’s my car.” He pointed out that it wasn’t actually, that she was renting it. “And who is making the rental payments on it? That would be me. Suck it up, Samuel. You told me how much you love to walk. So what’s the big deal if I don’t care to walk and need to go places?”

He didn’t have an answer. But he did grumble about it for the rest of the night.

A couple of days ago, they’d found an abandoned gas grill behind one of the stores. The tank needed to be filled, which wasn’t all that much for them to have a few hot meals. It didn’t seem to have anything else wrong with it, so they had been experimenting with all kinds of things to cook on it. He’d never been one to cook out of doors, much less eat out, but they’d been having a good time, and he was glad for the warmth on some mornings. The nights were getting chilly while the daytime temps would soar up to in the nineties. Christ, he hated Ohio weather sometimes.

Samuel loved watching the people in this little town get ready for their day. The woman just down the street from where they were parked was putting her little ones on the bus. The man next door to her would be out in his garden, cursing a great deal about how the deer and other animals were getting into things. Samuel had never seen anything in the man’s garden and thought he just liked to complain.

There were signs of movement in the bank. He could almost set his clock by one of the residents of the town making her way to the bank.
